Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center selects the Acoustic Magic Voice Tracker™ Array microphone to record “Voice Clips” on its PACs system

This entry was posted in Press Release on by .

Sudbury MA—January 16, 2008 – Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center wanted to use the “Voice Clip” feature in their PACs system, but didn’t want to encumber their Radiologists with headset microphones. The Voice Tracker™ desktop array microphone was able to pickup the Radiologist’s comments, while filtering out the background noise.

According to Jerrod L Davis, Director of Radiology at Twin Lakes, “The Amicas Vision Series PACs system allows the Radiologist to leave a “Voice Clip” for referring physicians to listen to right away, so they don’t have to wait for the report. The problem we faced was finding a handsfree/headset free microphone that was good enough. We experimented with several microphones that simply could not pick up the voice or picked up every noise in the surrounding area. Finally, we tried the Voice Tracker, and it was perfect for the “Voice Clips”. The Voice Tracker™ doesn’t pick up noises outside the listening range and the Radiologist doesn’t have to talk louder or directly into it.”

Davis indicated he would also use the Voice Tracker™ with automatic speech recognition-based dictation software.

The Voice Tracker™ locates a talker and electronically steers a “listening beam,” like an acoustic searchlight, in that direction. This creates spatial filtering; sounds from other parts of the room are not picked up. In addition, digital noise reduction processing removes background noise. This two-stage noise reduction, coupled with the sensitivity of eight always on microphone elements, gives the Voice Tracker™ outstanding range and sound quality.

“We are very pleased to be associated with a quality organization such as Twin Lakes, and are excited that our microphone has found a new application in the PACs arena,” said Bob Feingold, CEO of Acoustic Magic, designer of the Voice Tracker™ Array microphone.

SecureComm Embeds Acoustic Magic’s 6 Element Voice Tracker™ Array Microphone in its Lynx Language Translator Tablet

This entry was posted in Press Release on by .

Array microphone provides unsurpassed recognition accuracy even with talkers separated by several feet.

Sudbury, MA, June 27, 2007 – Acoustic Magic, Inc., the leader in array microphone technology, announced today that its Voice Tracker™ array microphone technology has been built in to a tablet-like language translator developed by Secure Communications Systems, Inc, a leader in ruggedized PC devices. The Voice Tracker™ provides high quality, long-range audio pickup, which is particularly important in language translation applications for the military as it provides a safety stand off range for the warfighter that is essential in protecting our troops while enabling them to communicate across a language barrier.

“Acoustic Magic’s array microphone technology gives the Lynx unique capability that is essential for practical speech to speech translation in the field as the users do not have to pass around a handheld microphone,” said Dick Darden, VP Speech Translation Programs at SecureComm. The array steers a “listening beam” to the talker, reducing noise from other directions. “In some of our tests, the sound quality from a speaker at 6-8ft was so good that we had almost 100% recognition accuracy at realistic background noise levels with speech to speech software.”

The microphone array is located around the periphery of the 5.5″ X 4.5″ lid, which is raised in operation so talkers in front of as well as behind the tablet can be “heard”, enabling two way conversation. The Lynx translator is designed to be a generic platform suitable to host any speech to speech software such as SRI International IraqComm™ and IBM MASTOR, as well as that of other vendors.

According to Bob Feingold, CEO of Acoustic Magic, “the Voice Tracker™ array microphone technology is ideal for embedded applications in PC tablets because the number of the microphone elements, and their placement, can easily be changed. In addition, the beamforming and noise reduction software runs on our own DSP, eliminating drain on the PC’s processor and memory.”

Microphone provides High Quality, Long Range Audio for IP-Surveillance Systems

Sudbury, MA, November 9, 2006 – Acoustic Magic, Inc., the leader in array microphone technology, announced today that its Voice Tracker™ microphone has been approved for use with network cameras and video servers from Axis Communications, the global leader in the network video market. The Voice Tracker™ provides long-range audio pickup, which is particularly important in remote monitoring, security, surveillance and broadcasting applications.

“Network video systems can easily incorporate audio, a major benefit that IP-Surveillance provides over analog DVR systems,” said Fredrik Nilsson, general manager for Axis Communications. “Quality microphones – like those from Acoustic Magic – are critical in order to effectively use audio detection technology and audio recoding features available through the latest generation of network cameras and video servers.”

The Voice Tracker’s unique technology locates the region where the conversation is coming from and electronically and automatically steers a “listening beam,” like an acoustic searchlight, in that direction. This creates spatial filtering, and “noise” from other parts of the room is not picked up.

According to Bob Feingold, CEO of Acoustic Magic, “the Voice Tracker™ microphone is effective in somewhat noisy environments like convenience stores because it reduces background noise by utilizing both spatial filtering and digital noise reduction. It also has improved sensitivity by constructively adding the outputs of the 8 individual microphone elements in the array.”

The Voice Tracker™ connects directly to Axis network cameras through a 3.5mm plug.

Ohio University College of Business uses Acoustic Magic’s Array Microphones for Distance Learning and Large Group Teleconferencing

This entry was posted in Press Release on by .

Sudbury, MA June 12, 2006 – Finding a microphone that can pick up all the talkers in a large group meeting or distance learning class, while suppressing background room noise so the conversation can be heard at the far end, is a challenge. Often, individual headset microphones are used, but they are not practical when large numbers are required. Conventional conferencing microphones are also expensive, and have limited range for large audiences.

Ohio University has found a solution in the Voice Tracker™ array desktop microphone, and has used it successfully with Adobe Macromedia Breeze™, Skype™, WebEx™ and Windows Media Encoder™ for web casts and conferences.

David Underwood of the College of Business at Ohio University (Athens, Ohio), reports: “The Voice Tracker™ is great for 15-20 person seminars and meetings, at ranges up to 20 feet. Although I could put lavaliere mics on the professors, the Voice Tracker™ gives him or her freedom to not worry about microphone placement and drop out; and the Voice Tracker™ does a great job picking up the questions from the back of the room. We have been configuring it with an audio mixer in our international and regional graduate programs for Adobe Macromedia Breeze and SKYPE conferences since December. With some bottom EQ added to the output, it makes the Internet sound really good.”

According to Bob Feingold, founder of Acoustic Magic, Inc., the Voice Tracker™ is the first desktop microphone that is effective in large group conferencing applications because it combines two levels of noise reduction with a wide field of view.

It locates a talker and electronically steers a “listening beam,” like an acoustic searchlight, in that direction. This creates spatial filtering; sounds from other parts of the room are not picked up. In addition, the Voice Tracker™ removes “stationary” background noise with digital noise reduction algorithms. This two-stage noise reduction, coupled with increased sensitivity since the Voice Tracker’s eight microphone elements are used continuously and constructively, give the Voice Tracker™ outstanding range and sound quality.

The Voice Tracker™ can be connected to a PC through the sound card, or through a USB port using the optional USB adapter.

Westec InterActive selects the Voice Tracker™ Array Microphone for Enhanced Audio in Retail and Restaurant Audio/Video Surveillance and Operations Audit

This entry was posted in Press Release on by .

IRVINE, Calif., March 17, 2005 – Westec InterActive, the leader in interactive remote security monitoring for convenience store, retail, restaurant and other business applications, today announced that it has selected Acoustic Magic’s Voice Tracker™ array microphone to be used for enhanced audio in retail and restaurant audio/video surveillance applications. The decision was made after it was tested in several Circle K, 7-Eleven and McDonalds sites that have Westec interactive security systems.

“Acoustic Magic’s Voice Tracker™ array microphones proved to be very effective in recording conversations in settings where there is a lot of background noise, such as convenience stores,” said Michael J. Upp, Vice President, Business Development for Westec InterActive. “The Voice Tracker™ reduced the background noise from air conditioners, fans, and other equipment, improving the sound quality of recordings at the stores.”

The Voice Tracker’s unique technology locates the region where the conversation is coming from and electronically steers a “listening beam”, like an acoustic searchlight, in that direction. This creates spatial filtering, and “noise” from other parts of the room is not picked up.

“The ‘listening beam’ allows our Operational Audit Specialists to clearly hear conversations between employees and customers. This helps monitor customer service levels and accurately report findings back to our customers,” says Upp.

According to Acoustic Magic, its Voice Tracker™ microphones are effective in reducing background noise by utilizing both spatial filtering and digital noise reduction. They also have improved sensitivity by constructively adding the outputs of the 8 individual microphone elements in the array.

“Westec InterActive was the first company to recognize the potential of the Voice Tracker™ as a surveillance microphone in convenience stores,” said Bob Feingold, CEO of Acoustic Magic. “We’re pleased to have our technology used by Westec, the leader in remote access security.”

Ergonomics by Design Ltd. combines Acoustic Magic’s Voice Tracker™ Array Microphone with Sony handheld recorders as a portable meeting recording tool

This entry was posted in Press Release on by .

Pearce, Canberra, Australia – March 15, 2005 – Ergonomics by Design, Ltd. often uses Sony digital recorders to record meetings and interviews in varying conference rooms without very much notice as to when the discussions would start. Handheld recorders were initially chosen since they are extremely portable. The only difficulty was the handheld recorder’s limited pickup range; the rooms were large and the number of attendees would vary in every meeting. The Voice Tracker™, used as an auxiliary microphone through the 3.5 mm jack on the handheld digital recorder, provided an ideal solution for this application due to its light weight, its portability and its immense recording range.

According to Wendy Elford, Director of Ergonomics by Design, Ltd. “The Voice Tracker™ array microphone performed brilliantly. We used it with a Sony ICD-BM1 and also on the laptop using the Microsoft sound recorder. With the Voice Tracker™ we were able to catch speakers up to 6 m away. Our tests gave excellent quality around a large conference table in a room approximately 5 m x 8 m.”

Karl Francois, National Solutions Manager with Voice Perfect Systems, who worked with Ergonomics by Design, Ltd. on this application, observed: “The Voice Tracker™ array microphone performed equally well with laptop based meeting recording software, offered by Lexacom and others”.

Bob Feingold, CEO of Acoustic Magic notes that “The Voice Tracker™ is a simple and cost effective alternative to installing an expensive sound system with a separate microphone for each person”.

The Voice Tracker™ locates a talker and electronically steers a “listening beam,” like an acoustic searchlight, in that direction. This creates spatial filtering; sounds and reverberation from other parts of the room are not picked up. In addition, digital noise reduction processing removes background noise. This two-stage noise reduction, coupled with the sensitivity of eight microphone elements, gives the Voice Tracker™ outstanding range and sound quality.

Woman’s and Children’s Hospital Installs Acoustic Magic’s Voice Tracker™ Array Microphones for handsfree recording in pathology cut-up room

This entry was posted in Press Release on by .

North Adelaide, Australia – March 10, 2005 – Women’s and Children’s Hospital needed a recording solution for its pathology cutup room that was hands-free and could pickup the doctors from several feet away. They chose the Acoustic Magic Voice Tracker™ array microphone and Lexacom Talk & Type digital dictation management software. The Voice Tracker’s long-range allowed the doctor to be recorded as he moved around the table. Lexacom’s foot pedal control completed the hands-free operation. The recording computers were no longer required to be near the pathologists.

Dr. Tony Bourne of Woman’s and Children’s Hospital noted “this solution was so effective that we implemented it in the mortuary as well, with equally good results. In the Mortuary, the microphone is attached to the ceiling, several feet above the bench. Both microphones are separated by some metres from the computers, which are linked through the hospital network to the secretarial workstations. The system has worked very well for us and our secretarial staff indicate that the quality of the dictation is much improved over our old tape based system.”

Karl Francois, National Solutions Manager for Voice Perfect Systems, who worked with Women’s and Children’s Hospital on this application, noted “when Voice Perfect first looked at the Voice Tracker™, it was originally intended to be used with Dragon NaturallySpeaking™ speech recognition software as a desktop microphone option. Since then we’ve been able to apply it to video conferencing, as well as meetings, interviews and clean room recording. It certainly has proved how incredibly versatile this product can be in any application requiring a powerful, long-range microphone.”

Bob Feingold, CEO of Acoustic Magic, notes that “The Voice Tracker™ is unique in its capability of scanning a full 180 degrees and of picking up talkers at ranges of 25 feet or more.”

Acoustic Magic’s Voice Tracker Array Microphone enables Clallam County to record public Commissioner Meetings and work sessions

This entry was posted in Press Release on by .

Clallam Country, WA September 15, 2004 – Public meetings are often recorded to assure accurate and complete minutes. This presents a challenge to microphone technology, since many of the meetings are held in large, reverberant rooms, where it is difficult to pick up discussion around a table and questions from the audience.

Callam County has met this challenge through the use of the Voice Tracker™ Array Microphone combined with SoniClear digital recording software from Trio Systems.

According to Dan Engelbertson, County Administrator, “Our meetings are held in a 40′ by 40′ room in an old Courthouse, with hard walls. There was so much reverberation, it was hard to understand what was recorded. The Voice Tracker™ is a thousand times better than the conventional microphone we were using. We can understand all the speakers around the table during work sessions, and we can understand comments from the audience 30 feet away.”

Bob Feingold, CEO of Acoustic Magic notes that “The Voice Tracker™ is a simple and cost effective alternative to installing an expensive sound system with a separate microphone for each person.”

Clallam County uses the Voice Tracker™ microphone with the SoniClear MeetingPro Gov software running on a Windows computer. MeetingPro automatically records from the Voice Tracker™ microphone and makes it easy for clerks to record meetings, produce minutes, and research action items. The digital recordings can also be archived on CDROM, posted to a network server, and webcast on the Internet, making meeting information accessible to staff, elected officials, and the public.
